[That afternoon, Scar can be found looking particularly sorry for himself. Sure, he's usually bitter and angry and unapproachable... But right now, he's just plain miserable.

He's been hanging around in Goldenrod since before the carnival, lingering by the breeding center as his Skitty egg incubates. If something manages to go wrong, he wants be near people who know what they're doing. At the moment, though, he's sitting at the table of a small, outdoor restaurant, talking into his Pokégear.]

...Yeah.

[He closes it and sets it aside. His Zangoose and Teddiursa are both sitting with him, looking concerned. Yaminah, the Teddiursa, jumps into his lap, and he reaches to pat her on the head. Things really are much more bearable, with them around.]

[Scar is in an unusually good mood, and it's obvious in his voice to anyone who's already spoken the guy for any length of time. This is a huge change from yesterday. His Skitty has just hatched (FINALLY) and he's... excited about it. Or, at least, as excited as Scar ever gets about anything.

He does need some advice, though.]

I'm assuming hand-raising a Pokémon is different from training one that was caught from the wild.

[The soft mews of the young Skitty can be heard in the background.]

How much constant attention and care does a baby Pokémon require, exactly? Is it more similar to raising a dog?

[A valid question, Scar thinks, given the obvious intelligence of Pokémon. The way they bond and how they communicate is almost frighteningly human.]

[In a much better mood than yesterday, Scar can be found with his three Pokémon, Miriam the Skitty being the newest addition to the team. The baby Pokémon is slightly unsteady on her feet, and just figuring out her attacks. She's working with Zangoose and Teddiursa, chattering and playing and occasionally breaking for naps and food

...And frequently running off to greet strangers and collect flowers.]

It's not that hard, they usually let you know what they need. Though they might need extra attention depending on their personality.

What kind is it?

[Oh God, he knows that voice.]

She's a Skitty. She's... slightly skittish.

[And FREAKING ADORABLE. But you didn't hear that from him.]

[You'll never be rid of him, might as well resign yourself to your fate now.]

[Also he really likes erasing baby monsters don't judge.]

Skitty... those are normal type, right?

My Sewaddle was-- well, is-- pretty skittish too. [A skittish Skitty, say that five times fast.] Your best bet would be to speak softly and try not to be intimidating. And treats work, too.

[I bet she's just so cute she gives everyone around her cavities.]

So it's like any other animal.

[Scar's been doing that, of course. Believe it or not, RUSSEL, he's pretty good with Pokémon, thank you very much.]

And yes, she's a Normal type.

[Like both of his other Pokémon. Damn, he needs to get on that.]

Well, sorta. They're still smarter than a cat or a dog, but I'm sure you've realized that.

[WELL EXCUSE HIM, ~~PRINCESS~~ SCAR. Who's the one posting to the network asking for baby pokemon help???]

Then she shouldn't need anything special. Like Grass types like a lot of sun, and I've been told Fire types don't like to be out in the rain.

What's her name?

That makes sense.

[Though again, Scar doesn't have any experience yet raising a different type.]

...Her name is Miriam.

It's a little different, yeah. Not a whole lot when you get right down to it, though. They're smart little fuckers, so they learn quick. I'd say they're actually a little easier than dogs, honestly.

They do seem incredibly intelligent. I've never had a dog, so I can't be sure of the difference. But their interactions are very... human-like.

Yeah, they are. That's sorta what makes them easier to care for than a regular dog. They're a lot smarter, not that dogs are unintelligent, but they can't really communicate as well as these guys.

All that being said, individual personality's probably the biggest factor in how much attention they need, regardless of whether you hatch 'em or catch 'em. That seems to play an even bigger role than age from what I've seen so far.

[There's a brief pause, as Skitty is currently hopping into Scar's lap.]

She seems very attached already. And has a particular liking for flowers...

Attached to you, you mean? That's a good sign, especially if she just hatched. If they don't like you, it only makes things more difficult on you as a trainer.

[Flowers smell nicer than dead rodents, it's true.]

Couldn't begin to tell you what flowers could mean though. What is it? Some kinda grass dog?

[...look, Scar asked about taking care of dogs, okay? So Kuzuryuu's assuming he's dealing with a Pokémon dog here.]

No, she's a Skitty. More of a bright pink, unnatural looking cat.

[Really, the pink is weird. What gain could a Pokémon ever attain through being pink?]

Heh, you say that like a lot of them aren't unnaturally colored for what they are. Still though, I guess that's something you don't see every day.

It honestly depends on their type of personality, it's just like handling little kids otherwise.

Like kids? Do they demand as much constant attention?

You pretty much have to, you are technically their "parent" after all.

Hm. That's not so bad a thought.

[He muses out loud. The sound of a Skitty meowing for attention can still be heard in the background.]

You are taking it better then some people, they sort of panic at the thought.
Hmmm it sounds like your first child wants a little attention right now.

She's barely quieted down since she hatched...

[The meowing fades for a moment as Scar offers her a bit of food.]

Well, they can at least fight for themselves, to an extent. And it's not difficult to keep them contained.

[Especially with Amit and Yaminah... "helping."]

[Scar glances up upon recognizing the young girl's voice. There's a tired look in his eyes.]

[Names... Right. Introductions are always a second thought, for Scar.]

[He isn't fond of the name, or any of the connotations behind it, but it's the only one he has to rightfully give.]
